Real Talk: Job
by Ron Gavalik on November 8th, 2013

A lot of women I've come across during our current economic turmoil are placing a lot of judgement on my career. Writers, however, really don't have regular jobs, so to speak. Some of us do, but those gigs are shrouds, animated lies of our real lives. We attend daily fancy-dress balls where we hide our true identities behind fabric lined cubical walls and wear brown shoes to match our khaki pants.

Therefore, when a good looking woman inquires about my occupation, I consider which answer to reveal, the false or the real. After all, on those cold nights of lunacy, we lean on the regrets of lies when the truth gives us no warmth or pleasure or comfort.

Her: "What do you do for a living?"
Me: "I breathe air, drink water, and eat what some people call food."
Her: "I don't get it."
Me: "Neither do I."

After that exchange, there wasn't much to discuss.

I chose truth.
It set me free
and left me wanting
as usual
